Satya: Finding Your Truth

Following on from “Ahimsa” (non-violence) as posted a few weeks back, it is believed that the five Yama’s should be followed in numerical order to purify one towards the final stage of Ashtanga yoga; spiritual enlightenment (Samadhi).

As truthfulness is achieved, the results of the Yogi’s actions naturally result according to the will of the Yogi” 

Satya, is the following and fulfilling next chapter after feeling at ease with your impression as a ‘non-violent’ being. Both INWARDLY toward yourself, and OUTWARDLY toward others. It’s simple meaning? Truthfulness.

“That which exists, that which is”

In Sanskrit (ancient Indian text), “Sat” is translated as above. Sat-ya, in turn comes to mean “truthfulness”. To break it down in a simplified manner; it is to see, report and BE in a state of ever-present truth. Reporting things internally and outwardly as they are – not as we would like them to be. Altering our perception of a situation as we are experiencing it, and not allowing our minds to alter it to reflect a more pleasant situation.

Flowing on from Ahimsa (non-violence), and holding respect to this first yogic ethic can be challenging though. You are now not only holding yourself and others in a non-harming poise; but advised to speak, live and BE as truthful as you can.

To break it down further, I’ve put together a list of examples of HOW Satya is respected in your daily life.

PHYSICAL ACTS

Physically speaking, Satya (truthfulness) is BEING, ACTING and DOING everything in-line with the truth of your current situation. It is DOING things that align with what you say you will do and achieve. It is BEING the person you present on the outside, that represents your soul on the inside. It is DOING things you have said you would, when and how you said you will. It is BEING and DOING every physical act with a sense of truthfulness as you know, and truly believe it to be – not as you would like to perceive it. 

Example:  Acting as if you are a personal trainer to paying clients when you haven’t done any officiating training and are not registered with a governing body.  A bit like an actor/actress in a movie whom is temporarily representing a fictional character in order to illustrate a story. 

MENTAL ACTS

Mental acts relates to how you SPEAK, rather than what you DO. It requires you to speak your truth, tell the truth and banish even the slightest white lies to the edges of the earth. It requires you not only to be honest with others to help them understand your FACTIONAL life; but also being honest with yourself and not living in a FICTIONAL reality. 

Example:  Telling someone you can’t meet them at a certain time and place because “I’ve got to… *insert lie here*…” rather than telling them that in all honesty, you’re tired or perhaps, you just don’t want to. 

EMOTIONAL ACTS

As mentioned above, emotional acts of Satya mean that you are being truthful with your SELF. You are honest. You are open. You are sharing, loving and supporting of that truth. You’re not hiding from the truth. You’re not sidestepping it and brushing it under the covers. You’re dealing with the reality of the situation RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU, and owning it for better or worse. 

Example: Telling yourself that you are an a mountaineer when you’ve simply hiked Australia’s largest peak (which is lesser than the Port Hills of Christchurch, New Zealand). Another example, which most of you could relate to is simply telling yourself you are “not good enough”. Not only would this by a lie, but a great example of combining Satya (truthfulness) AND Ahimsa (Non-Violence).

Before I sign off, I also wanted to add this GREAT tip I found on Yoga International to bring the practice of truthfulness flowing into your life, helping you on your path. Give it a read, and next time you are feeling uncomfortable with a mis-truth; note it, act on it and change it.

Satya is truth. Satya is honesty. Satya is the most RAW and REAL version of who you are. It is saying, doing, being, acting and thinking as the person you truly are.

It’s being unique. It’s being awe-inspiring. It’s being fabulously-flawed and perfectly-imperfect.

It’s being you, and ONLY YOU – because everyone else, is simply already taken.
